When a young neighbor, Miguel, tries to befriend him, Johnny dismisses him: “Great, more immigrants,” he says. For the somehow uninitiated: After having some rough encounters with Johnny and hitting on Johnny’s ex-girlfriend Ali (a luminescent Elisabeth Shue), Daniel becomes pals with his apartment’s Okinawan handyman Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki “Pat” Morita, who was actually a California native and yes, the character’s broken English was viewed as problematic even then). Vidal was the stunt double for Miyagi in the beach Crane Kick scene and played the last semi-finalist to face Johnny before Daniel. At least, let’s hope not.

Kubota was a noted celebrity trainer who cultivated many famous students including James Caan, Robert Conrad, Ron Ely, George Kennedy, Sam Peckinpah, Hilary Swank (who starred as The Next Karate Kid) to name a few. But when his crusty stepfather hands Johnny a check so that he’ll never have to see him again, and when a teen neighbor begs Johnny to teach him how to defend himself, the one-time karate kingpin decides to open his own dojo and reboot his own past. In the meantime, I’ll be over here bitterly rehashing my high school rivalries … and crane-kicking this recycling bin. The truth is it might not even be Karate. There’s some historical validity to Kreese teaching “Korean Karate.” Much of Tang Soo Do came to the U.S. via military veterans that served in Korea. In flashback, we see Daniel and Johnny fight, and Johnny hammers on Daniel’s already-injured leg.
