Sorry to be a party-pooper, but to say I like this book or even that it is OK would be a downright lie! Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. However, I would have preferred a more linear plot and I found that extended family confusing. I could have used a family tree because there were too many names and nicknames for me to keep straight. Well, of course, I loved this book, but then my beautiful daughter-in-law is hispanic, born in Tijuana, and replanted here in North Carolina, when my son returned to his home state in 2008. . On top of that, the storyline shifts from past to present, to further in the past, and back again. She must have ghost writers galore. I suppose that choice did serve the characters and the feel of the novel well, but it left me as a reader always feeling on the outside.
Nearly all of the characters have multiple nicknames (Little Angel is "the Assimilator," Lalo is "Hungry Man") as if to highlight their complex and multitude-containing status, the way a person changes depending on who's doing the looking.
