The story gets more interesting toward the end, in the unfolding drama and downfall of the Man of the title. But while talent and drive are all you need to make it in music, they aren't enough to make it through a life.
However, I found hard to get into the story at the beginning, as I found the music details too dry for a novel. Young man with a horn. Short and on point.

The book is a wonderful homage to jazz, but is definitely a period piece in its views of race and class, occasional use of the “n” word and other language more typical of pre-WWII America.
