An example of someone who has achieved spiritual transcendence would be none other than Buddha himself. You may be going through life on autopilot without giving much thought to who you are, what you want, and why you are here. You understand that human personality can’t be defined as ‘good’ or ‘bad’. However, your spiritual journey continues with new life learning experiences, towards spiritual enlightenment. In order to dissolve the ego we need to quiet our minds and stay mindful in the present moment.

Spiritual awakening is the state of self-realization beyond the ego. Many spiritually awakened people practice mindfulness meditation in some form on a daily basis, and this is a good idea if you want the spiritual enlightenment experience to keep expanding.

In the present moment there is no suffering or pain that results from worrying about the past or future.

Your actions will be based on love, which are clear symptoms of awakening. What is Spirituality? This consciousness happens when you stop being the observer, and instead you ask yourself, who is observing?

Given this quest towards spiritual awakening, we’ve seen in this article the arduous path that we must take. While I primarily focus on Buddhist teachings throughout the book – particularly as they relate to mindfulness and meditation – I also provide key insights and ideas from Taoism, Jainism, Sikhism and Hinduism. When asked to think of awakened people, names like Mahatma Gandhi, Buddha, and Jesus come to mind. It involves the dismantling of core aspects of who you are, giving you the opportunity to rebuild yourself in a new and grander vision. You may also find yourself talking to yourself more often. So you look within.

You may experience strange voices that feel uncomfortable and that don’t seem as your own.

Who we are currently — the things we like, our behaviors, our preferences and convictions — are acquired over years of socialization. You may still experience spiritual awakening symptoms, but now as you have found inner peace and entered the healing process, they will be easier to handle.

Think of inner peace as being unflappable.

And with proper spiritual guidance, you’ll be able to encounter a spiritual awakening. Instead of going beyond your ego, your Spirit becomes trapped and dormant as the ego takes the reins. Like a snake that changes skin, the growth of our spiritual self requires us to let go of the negative parts as well. You may experience one, two, or multiple triggers at once: The start of a spiritual awakening always begins with a sense of inner turmoil. You will realize that you have a place and purpose in this life here and now, just like everyone else.

It doesn’t mean that things don’t go wrong in your life, it just means that when things do go badly, you aren’t on an emotional roller coaster of anger, frustration, or despair.

After a while the emotions will resolve on its own in the holy light. You don’t wake up and realize there is a higher power or that there is a magical frequency in the background you can tap into. This can be a lifelong journey, and not something you can accomplish in a month or a year. In order to resolve this, one must undergo the process of Shadow Work.

A spiritual awareness that there might be something more to life than what we can perceive with our five senses, awakens in this stage. Think about your true self as your pulse. What does this mean? Upon realizing the futility of our own life, we begin dismantling our preconceived notions of what life is or should be.

As such, pursuing this ultimate truth requires an act of introspection, one that investigates the nature of oneself.

Through the years of learning and interacting, the ego adopts things you like and don’t like, as well as convictions that separate what’s good and what’s evil.
