As always, it's lovely to read Herriot. They all try to explain what their animal’s ailment is, with the end result that he can’t hear any of them. Herriot remembers, in this chapter, a time when tuberculosis was common in their area back in Darrowby, and the veterinarians had to check many herds of cattle. With no real knowledge of Herriot outside of his professional accomplishments, I read his first book casually; cute stories about a budding British veterinarian and his furry, lovable patients in 1930’s farmland. #3 in his series of tales, this is an excellent read brimming with nostalgia and showing James Herriot's love of animals, his job and for Yorkshire. James Herriot must surely rank amongst the top three authors in Britain and I would recommend that everyone - and I mean everyone - should read this book. He loves his work and those he works for, and that tenderness shows in his storytelling with a good amount of humor perfectly balancing it all out. I read the children’s books to my children over and over again and we have visited the town of Thirsk in Yorkshire and the James Herriot Museum, which we loved. At the end of his stay, the Golden Retriever, Kim, comes back for a visit, and Herriot is happy to see how well the dog is doing.
