Like Men Behind the Sun, the film was both criticized and praised for its brutal portrayal of the Japanese atrocities, such as the notorious contest to kill 100 people using a sword, during the early and late stages of World War II, but at the same time was questioned over historical accuracy and violence which gave the film a more exploitation feel to it. However after having sat through it for the second time and knowing what to expect, I can say that I enjoyed the film a whole lot more.
The first time I saw this film, the gore and violence depicted in this film really got under my skin, therefore I gave this film a negative review and that’s saying something, for I’ve seen a lot of messed up movies.
This movie shows so much death, some being overly extreme, but according to the accounts of people who were there and survived, all of the stuff is very accurate. All the films from my exploitation lists, bundled into one mega-super-list-to-rule-them-all! Black Sun: The Nanking Massacre is unflinching in its depiction of the barbaric cruelty with which the occupying army raped, pillaged and terrorized the defeated populace. Hundreds of thousands of people were raped and murdered, and weren’t treated with an ounce of respect. It may not have exactly aged fantastically, but I still think it’s an important film to behold; one in which is gratuitously violent but for good reason and you can feel the anger from behind the camera. So they came into Nanking to kill, rape and pillage so that the Chinese will be liberated and benefit from Japan's great Emperor. It’s an emotional rollercoaster and made all the sadder by the fact that it’s not only based on real events, but that the real events were so much worse than shown here, and that’s saying a lot considering we see a woman unborn baby ripped from here….

Rather gory/sadistic retell of the WWII atrocities carried out by the Japanese. I was very tempted to skip this after the previous two disappointments, but I'm glad I stuck through. Just monotonous death interspersed with facts. The only scenes I really enjoyed were the Japanese debates of morality and such included in the film where surprisingly (for a propaganda film) some of the Japanese disagree with the methods being used. The series is truly disturbing, but does work well as a teaching aid, in order for us to understand how history is essential in preventing us from this sort of thing again.
