Interestingly, both Steve Lopez and Janice in the other book reach a point (to their own horror) where they are so exhausted and frustrated that they just wish someone would take the "problem" off their hands. Having seen the movie that was based on this book long before having read the book itself, I had a general idea of the story. 3.5 Stars - There are some great things about this book that kept me interested and connected to the story, which is actually great.
A little over four years ago, the Hilton Foundation awarded a generous grant to CSH to launch an initiative to reduce the number of long-term homeless people, with a special emphasis on ending homelessness among people with serious mental illness. I love reading books by newspaper columnists (Marley and Me, Dan Savage's The Kid, and anything by Dave Barry), and Steve Lopez was one of my favorites. This prompts Lopez to contact Ayers’ sister back East, who isn’t sure whether or not her brother is still alive. Despite having his world turned upside down so many times, Ayers-Moore says her brother still has ‘so much compassion for other people.’, ‘He loves being respected so much,’ she shared. The respect he received helped to change him and make him a better person.’.

To see how Steve and Janice felt the intensity of these feelings with people they had only known a year, and had no true ties to provides a sliver of insight into how painful it can be for families. It is a true story based on investigative journalism, which eventually tells more about the author than the subject.
