Life lesson told through the eyes of Edie, who gave her power away in the traditionally expected ways for women. There was so much they could have done to make this film believable via better character development and not focusing on the notion that an inexperienced 83-year old woman can trek alone in the wilderness and climb a mountain for the improbable big finish. It stayed with me. I found i was disappointed with the overall finished product to not be satisfying for my enjoyment. And the idiot actually lets her do it. After a run in with the locals, their relaxing break soon descends into a hellish ordeal.
I was attracted to this film because of its many awards, as well as the subject matter.
I mean, come on...next was the notion that somehow it’s OK that an 83-year old woman should tell Jonny that she is going to trek into the wilderness alone, which by the way is something even the most experienced hikers know is dangerous and unadvisable, let alone a frail old lady who can barely stand up wearing a heavy backpack.
Cantankerous and bored octogenarian Edie (Sheila Hancock) ditches her life and family and decides to climb a mountain in Scotland in this feel-good UK drama. The daughter of a Scottish farmer comes of age in the early 1900s. Against her daughter’s wishes, she heads to Scotland and employs Jonny (Kevin Guthrie, Whisky Galore ) to help her prepare for the gruelling climb. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness. Suilven, striking up a friendship with a young climber along the way. A pushy clerk at the store talks Edie into hiring Jonny as a guide and teacher, and Edie begins to prepare for the climb, exchanging her pearls, cardigan, and raincoat—and her decades-out-of-date traveling teapot—for a full set of new gear, from jacket to boots and tent.

I watched this film last night. 'Edie' reminds us all that anyone at any age can be a dreamer and an inspiration. Beautiful cinematography, scenery; brilliant performances by the leads. Believing that it's never too late, newly widowed Edie (Sheila Hancock) embarks on a trip to the Scottish Highlands to fulfill her dream of climbing the intimidating Mt. Naturally everything went wrong, repeatedly, but the absurdity continued...she loses an oar in the boat, which later miraculously beaches itself in the exact place where she needed to go, it starts raining, which of course is hardly shocking, considering it’s freaking Scotland, it’s pouring and she can’t read her map, her tent blows away before she can secure it, and so she curls up in the rain for a while before seeing a cabin that is apparently occupied in that there is a fire, lit candles, and yet no one is home...in spite of the obvious middle-of-nowhere ridiculousness, let alone fire hazard for the not present owner occupant, she falls asleep there, wakes, is fed porridge and tea by a complete stranger who doesn’t seem to question what the hell this old woman is doing in his house and further, they exchange zero words. Disappointing...better cinematography than screenwriting, Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2020. I had time to soak in the beauty of the setting for the movie and think about its content. The inspiration is not only from the main character's willingness to reach her goal in this movie, but also from those beautiful people who assisted her in the journey. She employs a personal trainer in his twenties, who is at first only interested in her money. There aren't any user reviews for this movie yet. For me the language was a little bit hard to understand at times, because it was filmed in Scotland and they speak with heavy Scottish accents, but it did not detract from the film. However, as the film evolves, it shows how people of all ages can become true friends, and thus learn so much from each other. From a cliff top, a man in a hoody leaps to his death. The excellent script and performances of these two main characters along with breathtaking cinematography make this movie even more memorable.
