Like what we always say, it’s very important in horror movies to have lead characters that the audience will totally sympathize with and care for, so that we can be truly frightened for their safety.

The script raises a lot of question that it fails to answer.

‘Sunod’ is refined, it’s smart, it’s visually stunning, and it’s frightening in its set up and atmosphere.

Carmina Villarroel gives a solid performance of a woman with a mission; her singular focus is to protect and care for her daughter that you never question Olivia’s motives and choices. Ho-hum. It starts with a man running in the forest being harrassed by a supernatural force and we don’t feel anything for him at all since we don’t even know him.

The world of the call center makes such an interesting storyline, but unfortunately doesn’t actually interweave with the supernatural elements that drives the story forward.

Director Carlo Ledesma and Director of Photography Mycko David take special care in creating strikingly gorgeous images that puts front and center the relationship of Carmina Villarroel’s Olivia and her daughter Annelle, played by a wonderfully versatile Krystal Brimner; the relationship which is at the crux of this movie. All Rights Reserved. Olivia needs money for her treatment, so she applies to work as a call center agent in a company housed in an old building owned by the family of Mylene Dizon. Grab a seat and whet your appetite with some of our favorite hungry personalities as we challenge Carmina Villaroel-Legaspi to answer questions while she is eating. It is said to be an old hospital in the 1970s where some mysterious things transpired. A great asset is the superbly evocative cinematography by Mycko David that establishes the right atmospheric mood. The script is juggling with so many narrative elements that it takes its time to with the exposition of its many different parts that it often doesn’t feel whole. We don't have any banner, Flash, animation, obnoxious sound, or popup ad. But when they finally all come crashing together halfway through the film, ‘Sunod’ really hits its stride. In “The Heiress”, Maricel is the predator and we certainly don’t empathize with her or any other character. Sorry but we’ve seen that kind of ending countless times in other more blood-curdling horror flicks, both local and foreign. It takes a long while before the four different aspects of the narrative — Olivia and her daughter, Olivia’s life in the call center, the haunting in the building, and the building’s history — come crashing together. She takes a job at a call center, only to be haunted by the ghost in it. The young Freddie Webb is played by Victor Silayan, and his wife is Roxanne Guinoo, who is seen only in old photos.

Kate Alejandrino and JC Santos are solid actors all throughout their careers so far and they help build this world and make it real.
At first, you’d think it’s about a restless ghost who seeks revenge as her remains are still in the old building, not given a proper burial, but the story wants to be more than that. Looks like Susan wants to use it as some kind of conduit to connect Carmina’s body, through her navel, to something looking like it’s borrowed from the “Invasion of Body Snatchers”, with victims imprisoned inside cocoons that seem more like silly nonsense. The building has a history that puts Olivia into direct contact with the supernatural and, inadvertently, involves Annelle and her co-workers in a haunting with terrifying ramifications for everyone involved.
