We first meet the pair on duty in China (during the Boxer Rebellion), then in the Philippines, and finally in France in 1917. With that said, I think there's enough good things here to make it worth viewing.

1952 movie directed by John Ford starring James Cagney as Captain Flag, a 'tough-as-nails' Marine company commander in World War One. Cagney is at his energetic best and almost single-handedly keeps the thing moving. Good was story.

Raoul Walsh's version of the popular Maxwell Anderson play about U.S. Marines Flagg (Victor McLaglen) and Quirt (Edmund Lowe), two rivals who soon find themselves in France during WWI but their personal battle is over a beautiful woman (Dolores del Rio) they've both fallen for. The Hawksian hero knows how to do what he is doing even if he doesn't know why. cagney's character, Jerry Plunkett is a coward untill the end of the movie where he saves the day. Just after returning from the front line trenches to rest and refit his company, he receives a new top sergeant, Sergeant Quirt played by Dan Dailey, to get his new replacements ready for the next tour on the lines.

The situation makes you feel sad and uncomfortable, but it's none of your business. And though Ford didn't like her, Calvet is very charming as the barmaid.
